SOAR, Martin County Kiwanis Club to host Community Cleanup and Celebration on June 8

INEZ, Ky.  – Shaping Our Appalachian Region, Inc. (SOAR) and the Martin County Kiwanis Club are coordinating a Community Cleanup and Celebration for Saturday, June 8.

The Cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. throughout the county, and participants along with the general public are invited to a Community Celebration at the Roy F. Collier Community Center at 1 p.m.  The Celebration will feature free entertainment as well as food and refreshments.

“There is a movement occurring in Martin County, and it is one of unity and collaboration,” said Joshua Ball, associate executive director. Ball is from Martin County and attended Sheldon Clark High School. “This is special for me because it is home and is also a place where remarkable people reside.  This event is more than just people coming together to pick up litter.  It is the start of a community coming together to identify opportunities and seizing those opportunities to create a brighter future.”

Melissa Phelps, president of the Martin County Kiwanis Club, stressed that the Cleanup and Celebration is truly a community effort.

“The movement that we are creating is one that is open to everyone,” she said. “We want to begin a dialogue with those who care about this county. This dialogue is one that is open to all and one where ideas are welcome.  We are hopeful that this will begin a movement of collaboration that leads to action and results. Deep down, we all want a brighter tomorrow, and it is up to us to make it happen.”

SOAR and the Martin County Kiwanis Club will be announcing a date for two informational sessions on the Cleanup and Celebration.

“We are going to hold a meeting during the day and one in the evening, and we plan to have these meetings in different locations in the county to make it convenient for those who want to be a part of this,” said Ball. “In the coming weeks, we will be releasing more information pertaining to locations for pickup and drop-offs, as well as information on the Celebration.”

Registration for the Cleanup, for individuals and groups, can be done online at or by calling (606) 298-2807.
